the nursery...details

so i posted the pictures of the nursery the other day, but as i thought about it this morning, i realized i probably should have posted some details and information about where i got things.

the crib and dresser are from babies r us.  we wanted something versatile that would grow with baby.  we initially liked white wood, but decided that for a boy, and since the crib will convert all the way up to a full-size bed, the dark wood would probably be better.  they are both from the baby cache essentials collection - we ended up with the curved lifetime crib and the double dresser.

the glider is also from babies r us.  we really struggled with which glider to get.  we actually attempted to purchase 2 other ones that had been discontinued before settling on this one - the newco rosie glider.  i'm a little disappointed in the color (we chose seal - we thought it would a nice dark grey, but it's more green than we thought), but i love the fabric and it is insanely comfortable.

the bench is actually the expedit bookshelf from ikea.  i saw the idea on pinterest, and thought it would work out great.  storage is limited in our house, and we didn't want a big bulky toy chest taking up room.  this will work as storage and a place for him to sit and read or whatever.  my mom is making the cushion for the bench using this fabric.  she's also making a matching blanket. oh, and we got the baskets in the bench from ikea, too (the lekman box).

the music and movie quotes i designed myself (using picmonkey) and printed through snapfish.  they're not the best quality, but they work.  the only one i got elsewhere was the coldplay quote, which i downloaded from the sprik space blog.

on the gallery wall (left to right):

  • i designed the "where there is great love..." quote on picmonkey and printed through snapfish.
  • the little hulk and little superman are from mint parcel on etsy.  we had a hard time choosing which superheroes to use - they are all so adorable!
  • the he-man print was something i downloaded from deviant art and printed using snapfish.
  • the wookie the chew print is from james hance, and might be my favorite piece in the room.
  • my sister ordered the up thumbprint guest book from bleu de toi on etsy.  ok, no, this is my favorite piece in the room.
the lamp on the dresser is from home goods.  was wandering through on a random sunday and found it.  it fits in perfectly with the room.

i made the paper lantern mobile using paper lanterns i purchased from the paper lantern store.  it was an enormous pain in the ass, but totally worth it, because i love the way it turned out.

the rockstar print on the door is from it's personal prints on etsy.

the paint colors are both valspar, purchased at lowe's (valspar ultra - zero voc, low odor) - the blue is called ghost ship, and the orange is tangerine.

the shelves on the wall next to the crib are from target.  all the frames are from michaels, a.c. moore, or home goods.

the r2d2 toy chest and star wars trash can were both matt's when he was a kid.

so that's it!  that's where we got everything and how we decorated our nursery.  i mostly have pinterest to thank/blame for these ideas.

and finally, the nursery

finally getting around to revealing the nursery, even thought it isn't quite done.  still need the bench cushion and blanket that my mom is making, and the cross-stitch that matt's aunt donna is making to hang over the crib.  otherwise, we are all set and ready for baby boy to make his appearance and move into his new room!  so without further ado....

here's what you'll see as you walk into baby's room.

the corner with the crib, and my paper lantern mobile, which i love.  my step-sister had my nephew in the room at our christmas party, and she said he was totally enthralled with the lantern.  here's hoping baby boy will be, too.

here's what's behind the glider.  matt and i love music and movies, so we thought it was only appropriate to include some of our favorite quotes or lyrics.

l-r: grateful dead, "eyes of the world."  coldplay, "yellow."  willy wonka and the chocolate factory.

l-r: john lennon, "imagine."  rent.  queen, "a kind of magic."
here is the dresser and the gallery wall.

a few more detailed pictures of the gallery wall.

the special edition poster from the ben gibbard show
yup, that's matt and i, each at about 2 years old.  aren't we cute?
and this is the print my sister had made and had everyone sign at the shower.  i am completely in love with it - it is such a special piece, and i love that it has all of our closest friends and family on it!

mama and daddy, right up top  (c:
so there it is!  that's where baby boy will be living for the next however many years!  thanks for taking the tour!

our pinterest nursery

ok, we finally settled on a "design" concept for the nursery!  we have to nail down our paint colors and bedding, but at least we have a general idea for furniture and stuff.  i have pinterest to thank for....pretty much of all it.  ha ha!

we still have to decide on a crib, but as of right now, we are leaning towards this one.

we decided to go with dark wood because we thought it would grow with the baby better.  we wanted a crib that is convertible, and this one will actually convert to a full-size bed!  so with a baby boy, we thought dark wood will last much longer than white.  we didn't want something too ornate, we wanted it to be easy to find (available in-store at babies-r-us), and we wanted it to be relatively inexpensive.  this one fits the bill.

we'll most likely just start with one dresser, the matching one from the set.  this will obviously double as our changing table, as well.

i think we'll go with this glider (and matching ottoman).  we have an old rocker/recliner from matt's pop, but it's old and not terribly comfortable.  i also prefer the gentle gliding motion to the rocking motion.  plus, the rocker won't rock if the footrest is up.  this one gets great reviews and is among the least expensive we've seen.

for toy and book storage, and additional seating, we're going to get one or two bookshelves from ikea, lay them on their sides, and put pillows or a cushion on top.  i love this idea and can't wait to execute it in the nursery.  i think it's a great way to utilize limited space.

instead of a mobile over the crib, i completely love this look, and matt is, thankfully, totally on board.  it's a bunch of paper lanterns hung in a bunch from the ceiling.  i think it gives the baby such a great focal point, and it just looks really cool.

there are so many prints and posters that i'm interested in, so i think we're going to try to do a gallery wall over the dresser.

i'll wait till we finalize the gallery wall and have everything hung to show you my ideas.  there are so many prints, i don't know how i'll narrow it down!  one thing i know for sure i want to do is this:

nursery thoughts - design elements

there are some seriously smart nursery designs out there.  designs that maximize space and put things at an easy arm's reach away.  i never really thought about the fact that some things need to be easily accessible in baby's room - diapers, wipes, etc.  i tend to be a person who tries to put things away - i don't like a lot of unnecessary clutter.  but for babies, there are certain things that just need to be easily grabbable.

here are a few great ideas that make the space look nice but functional.  i really love the first one, with the metal basket over-head.

i plan on our baby having lots of books on hand.  i have always been a big reader, and matt is just now getting into reading.  my mom tells me that as a child, i could sit in my room for hours "reading" along with my books-on-record (remember those?).  i hope that our baby will be the same way.  there is a plethora of great ideas out there for book storage!  i definitely want baby's books to be easily accessible and to have room to stand cover-out.  i think it makes them much more interesting to look at!

and, of course, you can't have a baby closet without some adorable baby clothes dividers!  i love how you can so easily customize them to fit whatever theme/color scheme you choose!

i can't wait to start putting together baby ike's nursery!  we're definitely planning to find out the gender, so we're waiting to do any major planning until we know that.  but with all the great resources out there, i'm hoping to put together something that will be fun and exciting!

nursery thoughts - animals

another thought i have for the nursery is an animal theme.  there are so many great animal-themed bedding sets and nursery sets out there - monkeys, safari, birds, woodland, etc.  but i keep finding myself gravitating to giraffes.  this set, in particular, i love.

source: from babysupermall via nicole on pinterest
i also found this, and thought it would be really cute to do.  you could do it with all different animals and fabric prints.  it's a great way to be a little creative!

i saw this print somewhere and thought it was so adorable.

this print is so sweet.  it's definitely something i think i'd love to put in the nursery, possibly no matter what theme we go with.

source: from etsy via sarah on pinterest
here is a really cute idea for clothing hooks or hat hooks or what have you.  the project nursery link that the source is from doesn't actually take you to this nursery anymore, so i searched high and low for these hooks and found them at ikea (of course).

source: from projectnursery via bee on pinterest
this photo features a fox, which would go great with a woodland creatures nursery, but in theory you could probably do any stuffed animal.  i think it's a great idea!

so those are just some ideas for an animal- (ok, giraffe-) themed nursery.

nursery thoughts - travel

here is another theme that i am completely loving for a nursery - travel.  i grew up traveling pretty extensively with my family and loved every single second of it.  i was very lucky that way.  matt didn't travel much growing up, but since we started dating, i've taken him on many vacations and he really enjoys it, too.  our hope is to be able to share our love of travel with our children.  so what better way to start them off with an appreciation for travel than to design the nursery with a travel-inspired theme?  i found some great ways to do that.

first up, this nursery from project nursery.  this is amazing.  i love that they hand-painted the scenery around the walls.  i love the quote on the wall when you first walk in.  and i adore that rug.  if we go with a travel theme, i really want to find that rug.  it is awesome.  you should click through and look at all the pictures.

outside of that nursery, here are some other great ideas that really showcase a love of travel.

i love this idea to take pictures that represent places you've been.  i bet you could find some adorable graphic prints of the eiffel tower, the colisseum, palm trees...i think they're adorable.

another idea is to make these small map prints with important places in your relationship, like where you met and where you got married and where baby was born.

source: from minimoz via lisa on pinterest

i could definitely see us doing a travel theme.  what a great way to inspire imagination and creativity and curiosity.  to me, it feels like more a boy theme, but maybe that's just because most of the pictures i've seen are boy-ish colors.
